Introduction/Overview
Our society is constantly dreaming at night, traveling abroad, moving to other cities and utilizing media-flow such as facebook, twitter - over the internet.
As we are getting used to taking advantage of technology and media, at the same time, our scope of activities are growing larger and deeper. My thesis, 'Discoveries in Displacement' is re-imaging and re-structuring the familiar world in unfamiliar ways through the language of visualization- but interpreting and provoking data by using these visualizations to create narratives.
Key words
-Displacement
-Unfamiliar/Familiar
-Imagination
Major Questions/ Points of Investigation
-How does media allow us to re-image and restructure the familiar in unfamiliar ways?
-How can customized-media allow us to retell the stories in different ways?
-How do two different spaces such as real vs imaginary co-exist?
-How do different time spaces such as yesterday vs tomorrow co-exist?
These major questions and key words tie my works together and allow me to explore multiple directions.
'75=25+25+25' retells the dream stories of people in a provocative screen-based interactive installation. Based on design research of dreams, it is not just visualizing people's memories, desires, and imaginations in their dreams, but demonstrating their inner voices through re-presenting, re-imaging in a metaphoric and poetic manner.
'Space-Time Transference' demonstrates how streaming-media enable us to perceive diverse space-time in an imagined multimedia/infrastructure. Through the customized media, it explores the world and creates narratives by juxtaposing the virtual and real worlds.
‘Time Travel’ enables people to explore hidden worlds in playful, speculative and poetic manners. Based on the visualization of our daily travel experiences, it reveals distortion and absurdity of the space and time that we experience every day though people's stories of traveling.
Insights
This body of work elucidates that the real and the imaginary, the fact and the fantasy can and do co-exist in very intriguing ways. Even though, it started with data visualization, it is not just visualizing or diagramming, but interpreting and revealing hidden realms by see daily activities in new manners and telling people's stories…
